Owner's Note: In May 2017, I spotted a Sormiou 29 for sale in Concarneau. I had just read the latest Voile Magazine, which featured a full article on SANTHOSA (a Sormiou 29 that participated in the Transquadra race). The boat appealed to me because of its "light and fast" character and its fairly broad range of capabilities for a "small" vessel, suitable for coastal cruising with a small crew or even single-handed, and for a bit of racing if the mood strikes. I took possession of the boat on July 14th.
- 2017: based in Pornichet, sailing between Pornichet, Pornic, Noirmoutier, and Île d'Yeu with extensive maintenance.
- 2018, 2019, and 2020: winter storage ashore, then from April to November in La Turballe. Sailing on the Atlantic coast between Les Sables and Camaret.
- Spring 2021: tour of Brittany to St. Malo and back to Southern Brittany.
- 2022: winter storage ashore for one month in Le Crouesty, then sailing in Brittany and the Vendée region until the end of June.
- 2023: four months of winter storage ashore in Le Crouesty.
This boat is really fun as soon as you're sailing more than 60 degrees off the wind; it feels like you're sailing a 470. I often manage to catch and overtake 35-footers...
For example, last year: in 18-20 knots of wind, the return trip from Port Joinville to Port Haliguen took just over 7 hours (55 miles), with one reefed mainsail and a solent jib.
The boat's record is 17.25 knots planing on a wave. In 2018, after consulting with the naval architect, I had a deeper rudder made, which significantly improved the boat's handling with a small crew.
